In ancient China, mountains, rivers, ancient trees and beasts were all gods. According to the book of rites, sacrificing method, “mountains, rivers, valleys, hills, clouds, wind and rain, and monsters are called gods.”
Among them, the worship of ancient giant trees is very much, which is reflected in the book of mountains and seas.
“There is wood, which looks like an ox, with skin, like a tassel or a yellow snake. Its leaves are like Luo, actually like Luan, and its wood is like a moth. Its name is Jianmu. ” Guo Pu’s note: “Jianmu, Qingye, zigan, Heihua, Huangshi, no sound under them, no shadow.” ——Shanhaijing, haineinanjing
“When building wood, there are nine trees without branches, and there are nine gophers under it. In fact, it’s like hemp, and its leaves are like awns, and the big trees have gone through it, which was done by the Yellow Emperor.” ——Shanhaijing, haineijing
Among the cultural relics unearthed in Sanxingdui, Guangyuan, Sichuan Province, there is a bronze sacred tree cultural relic, on which there are branches and leaves, flowers, fruits, birds, beasts, hanging dragons, divine bells, etc.
Some experts say it’s the legendary Fusang, while others say it’s the Jianmu in the classic of mountains and seas. No matter what the experts say, it shows the fact that in ancient China, the worship of ancient giant trees has a long history.
Some of the existing millennium old trees in Xi’an are in the Taoist temple, some in the countryside, but without exception, every ancient tree is a tree with a story.
It is precisely because the idea that everything in ancient China has a spirit is deeply rooted in the people’s heart that a large number of ancient trees in Xi’an have survived through thousands of years of vicissitudes.
Maybe it’s not Zhengjie, but Chang’an Jun thinks so!
Ancient Ginkgo biloba
Finish saying the reason why the ancient trees survived, then talk about the ancient ginkgo in Xi’an, which is loved by thousands of people.
First of all, there are not many ginkgo trees in Shaanxi.
Ginkgo biloba is a deciduous tree belonging to ginkgo family and Ginkgo biloba. It is the oldest relict plant of gymnosperms left after the Quaternary glacial movement. The living Ginkgo biloba is rare and scattered. There are not many old trees over one hundred years old. All other plants of the same class have been extinct, so it is also known as living fossil.
Shizhen once said, “Ginkgo biloba grows in the south of the Yangtze River, and Xuancheng is the winner. The trees are two or three feet tall. The leaves are thin and vertical, just like the shape of a duck’s palm. They are carved and lack, and the face is light with green back. In February, it blooms in clusters, blue and white, and then it blossoms, and then it falls, which is rare for people. ” Ginkgo biloba is a rare species of light loving tree. It was born below 1000 (1500-2000) meters above sea level in Yunnan Province. The climate is warm and humid. The annual precipitation is 700-1500 mm. The area with deep, fertile and humid soil layer and good drainage has the best growth.
Shaanxi has a continental monsoon climate, with uneven annual precipitation distribution, large interannual and seasonal variability of precipitation, which is not suitable for the growth of ginkgo trees.
Why is ancient ginkgo so famous in Xi’an? The answer has something to do with Buddhism and Taoism.
1. Buddhist holy tree
It’s said that Sakyamuni started his Buddhist activities for 45 years after he became a Buddhist at first sitting under a tree, meditating and meditating, suddenly realizing the Tao and establishing Buddhism. Because he is a Sakyamuni, people call him Sakyamuni. The piper BOLUO tree transliterated according to the Sanskrit “pippala” has a well-known name called bodhi tree. The bodhi tree has become the sacred tree in people’s mind.
Because the bodhi tree is an evergreen tree growing in the tropics, not everywhere. Therefore, in Tang Dynasty, eminent monks replaced bodhi trees with ginkgo trees with strong adaptability and yellow leaves in autumn, which were widely planted in Buddhist temples all over China.
First, the ginkgo tree has a long life span and a tall and majestic tree body, which can best set off the solemnity and solemnity of the temple hall;
Second, the tree is full of yellow leaves in autumn, which is integrated with the color of monk’s cassock, and has the religious meaning of not being disturbed by the wind and dust. This is why ginkgo trees are always planted in famous Buddhist temples in China. It has a noble spirit, which indicates the generation of spirit. It not only reflects the ancient temple, but also awes the monks and Buddhist disciples.
Many Buddhist temples use gingko wood to carve Avalokitesvara statues or thousand handed Avalokitesvara statues, which are lifelike, especially the thin fingernails of Buddha statues, so they also call gingko “Buddha fingernails”.
2. Taoist fairy tree
Taoism advocates the nature of Taoism, seclusion and cultivation. It believes that “Tao generates all things, moral education of all things, and endless growth”. In Taoist view, the world’s famous mountains are the paradise of immortals. They divide the world famous mountains into ten big caves, thirty-six small ones and seventy-two blessed places. They like to plant Ginkgo biloba in the big and small caves and blessed places, which is called the immortal tree.
In Qingcheng Mountain, Dujiangyan City, Sichuan Province, it is said that a ginkgo tree planted by Zhang Daoling, the founder of Taoism, is regarded as the treasure of Zhenshan. The body of the tree grows a lot of downward overhanging, stone like color, rough and dignified, in the shape of mallet, cone and bamboo shoot, which is called “white fruit shoot” by Taoist. Besides the trees, a “gingko Pavilion” was specially built.
There are many ginkgo trees in the Taiqing official courtyard of Laoshan, Qingdao, Shandong Province, among which the two trees in front of the Dongtang house are the tallest, both male trees, both of which have the shape and spirit, and are eternal with the sun and the moon. It is said that they are related to the Taoist concept of seclusion, eliminating selfish desires, being indifferent to peace, and not marrying a wife and family.
Both Buddhism and Taoism worship Ginkgo biloba, so there are isolated, row or cluster ginkgo trees in all temples. Ginkgo biloba, a “living fossil” that survives in some remote and quiet mountain areas in China, does not need to be planted specially, but can also form a pleasant natural environment there, often becoming the first choice for monks to build temples.
